An epilepsy and mood drug that also weakly blocks HDAC enzymes, and the only one of its kind many children have taken for years.

A short-chain fatty acid anticonvulsant and mood stabiliser that also inhibits HDACs. Large numbers of children have taken it for years, which makes it the only compound in this class with a long-term paediatric record. It is also grouped with carbamazepine, on the strength of both being old anticonvulsants, and the two are not interchangeable: carbamazepine's case rests on a specific mechanism in a specific disease, not on the drug class.

Risks. Its label carries the strongest class of warning, for liver failure that can kill, most of all in children under two, for birth defects and lower IQ in a baby exposed in the womb, and for an inflamed pancreas.
