A sugar made of two glucose units, used in food. It switches on the cell’s clean-up system by a route that does not involve mTOR.

A disaccharide of two glucose units, used as a food ingredient with a long safety record. It induces autophagy independently of mTOR, through the transcription factor TFEB.

Risks. Fine as food. The amounts needed to do anything by mouth are enormous and mostly cause diarrhoea and a sugar load, and its injected trial had more serious side effects than placebo.
