Secukinumab / Ixekizumab
Approved, for something elseMeasured in people, not heightBy injectionAntibody
Two injected antibodies that block one inflammation signal. The first is licensed for childhood arthritis from the age of two, the second for psoriasis in children from six and for arthritis in adults only.
Monoclonal antibodies against IL-17A, given subcutaneously; secukinumab is human, ixekizumab humanised. Secukinumab is indicated for active psoriatic arthritis in adults and paediatric patients 2 years of age and older, for enthesitis-related arthritis in paediatric patients 4 years and older, for plaque psoriasis from 6 years, and for ankylosing spondylitis and hidradenitis suppurativa from 12. Ixekizumab's paediatric indication is plaque psoriasis from 6 years, and its arthritis indications are adults only.
Risks. No boxed warning on either, but both labels warn of serious infections, with fatal ones reported on secukinumab, of severe allergic reactions, and of severe eczema that has sent people to hospital. Both can start or worsen bowel disease, and in the exploratory trial of secukinumab in active Crohn's disease the patients on it did worse than the patients on placebo.
