A laboratory compound that pushes stem cells to become cartilage.

A synthetic small molecule found in an image-based screen for compounds that drive stem cells into cartilage. It binds filamin A and displaces CBFβ, which then partners RUNX1 to switch on cartilage matrix genes. Developed for osteoarthritis, never for stature.

Risks. Only its close relative has been given to people, injected into adult knees. More importantly, kartogenin breaks down into a chemical listed as a known human cause of bladder cancer — and that is the only part of it found in cartilage.
