Two anti-inflammatory painkillers that block both forms of the enzyme. Naproxen is licensed for arthritis in children from the age of 2. The ibuprofen tablet label says it was never tested in children at all. A separate injected ibuprofen closes a heart vessel in premature babies.
Arylpropionic acids inhibiting COX-1 and COX-2 without selectivity. Prescription ibuprofen tablets are approved for rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, mild to moderate pain and primary dysmenorrhoea, and the label states that controlled trials to establish safety and effectiveness in children have not been conducted. Naproxen tablets are approved for polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis among other indications, with safety and effectiveness below the age of 2 not established. Ibuprofen lysine is a separate product, approved to close a clinically significant patent ductus arteriosus in premature infants of no more than 32 weeks gestational age.
Risks. The ibuprofen and naproxen tablet labels both carry a boxed warning, the strongest kind there is, for heart attack and stroke and for bleeding, ulcers and holes in the stomach or gut, any of which can kill.
