A kidney drug that makes the body's calcium sensor read high, which turns parathyroid hormone down.

An oral positive allosteric modulator of the calcium-sensing receptor: it makes the receptor read a given calcium concentration as higher, so parathyroid hormone secretion falls. Indicated for secondary hyperparathyroidism in adults with chronic kidney disease on dialysis, hypercalcaemia of parathyroid carcinoma, and hypercalcaemia of primary hyperparathyroidism where parathyroidectomy is indicated.

FDA label

Risks. It is not established as safe in children: a study in children was stopped after one died with dangerously low blood calcium, and the drug could not be ruled out as a cause.
