A drug for the anaemia of kidney disease that tricks the body into behaving as though it is short of oxygen.

A HIF prolyl hydroxylase inhibitor. The class stabilises HIF by blocking the enzymes that destroy it, so a cell behaves as though it were short of oxygen. It was developed to raise erythropoietin and treat the anaemia of kidney disease.

Risks. US regulators turned it down over extra deaths, heart events and blood clots.
