Glucosamine

Food or supplementMeasured in people, not heightBy mouthNutrient
A sugar sold everywhere as a joint supplement, and a building block the body uses for cartilage.
An amino sugar the body makes itself, and the entry point to the pathway that produces the donor molecule for glycosaminoglycan synthesis. Commercially it comes mostly from shellfish chitin and is the world’s best-selling joint supplement. In the United States it is a dietary supplement with no approved drug label; in several European countries one patented crystalline form is a prescription medicine.
Risks. Well tolerated, interacts with warfarin, and the large independent trials found it does not work.
