Diphenhydramine

Approved, for something elseMeasured in people, not heightBy mouthSmall molecule
An old allergy drug whose drowsiness is what most shop-bought sleep aids are made of.
A first-generation H1 antihistamine. Its sedative side effect is the basis of its use as a non-prescription sleep remedy, and many over-the-counter sleep aids rely on it.
Risks. The packet says not to give it to anyone under 12, not to combine it with anything else containing the same drug, and to stop if sleeplessness lasts beyond a fortnight.
