METTL3 and m6A
The chemical mark that decides which messages a cell keeps, the two transcripts it removes in cartilage, and the compounds that raise it.
N6-methyladenosine (m6A) is the commonest internal modification on messenger RNA. METTL3 is the catalytic subunit of the writer complex it is installed by, working with METTL14 and WTAP. The mark is a layer of control above transcription: the gene is read as usual, and m6A then decides how long the transcript survives.
