Imprinted growth genes

Part of adult height is settled before birth, and part of it by which parent a gene came from. One stretch of chromosome 11 produces short stature or overgrowth depending on which way it fails.

Imprinted growth genes: IGF2 normally runs from the father's copy alone. Losing the mark turns it down and gives a small child; gaining it on both copies turns it up and gives an overgrown one. fatherIGF2motherIGF2fatherIGF2motherIGF2fatherIGF2motherIGF2one copy runsneither runsboth runNormalMark lostMark gainedfather's copy onsmall childovergrown child

Imprinted genes are expressed from one parental allele only. The mark is DNA methylation, set in the germline and maintained after fertilisation, and the growth-relevant cluster sits at 11p15.5.
